Safety and Security Course for Journalists: Protection and Appropriate Action in Crisis Areas
In 1999, two journalists were killed in the Kosovo. In the wake of this and similar incidents, the DEU UNUnited Nations Trg Centre was tasked to conduct a “Safety and Security Course” specifically for journalists. This type of training has been continuously conducted for more than 20 years now and has ever since enabled journalists to cope with the challenges and risks encountered in crisis areas. The training focus is on personal protection and risk avoidance.
The following details all pieces of information that are relevant for future participants prior to arriving at the training centre.
The course participants learn to understand the operational mission of the armed forces. With that, the media representatives are made aware of the armed forces’ operational requirements, learn to minimise the risks when fulfilling common tasks and missions, and are given the opportunity to deepen the trustful cooperation between the armed forces and the media. To this end, the course participants learn to recognise, assess, avoid and, if required, respond to threat situations in crisis Areas.
