The naval exercise Northern Coasts will play a key role at sea in the Quadriga 2025 exercise series. Between 29 August and 12 September 2025, multinational naval forces under German command will train in the Baltic Sea to show presence and further develop national and collective defence capabilities. The exercise simulates realistic threat scenarios from the air, water, and land. It focuses on the tactical planning and conduct of naval operations in coastal areas. The training will also involve the interaction of different forces, including the application of modern technologies in the maritime environment.
Northern Coasts 2025 pursues specific objectives such as enhancing operational capability through hands-on training and improving coordination with each other and with merchant ships. It also aims to improve the integration of the Joint Expeditionary Force, the rapid response force of the British armed forces, into NATONorth Atlantic Treaty Organization exercises.
The Chief of the German Navy, Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack, is responsible for operational control of the exercise, and is supported by an international directing staff, the Commander Task Force Baltic HQHeadquarters in Rostock, Germany. The intention is to intensify cooperation on the basis of NATONorth Atlantic Treaty Organization best practices and to continuously expand joint capabilities.
In addition to Germany, several countries of the Baltic Rim, including Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Canada will participate in the exercise. Northern Coasts underscores the determination of the partner nations to secure the strategically important Baltic region - a clear sign of political unity and military capacity.
