The public primarily perceives the Federal Ministry of Defence Guard Battalion in Berlin as a representative of the Federal Government. Whether foreign state guests are received with military honours or high-ranking politicians are publicly acknowledged during or at the end of their career, the battalion's servicemen and women are employed as honour detachments ranging in scale from guard of honour teams to the large formation of a Grand Tattoo.
However, the Guard Battalion does not only have representative functions. It also has a combat mission. In a state of tension or defence, the task of the battalion's servicemen and women is to protect facilities and official seats of the Federal Government. As a visible sign of a strong democracy, both missions are considered equal in importance and accomplishment.
