Melting snow in the snow

Melting snow in the snow

Flexible birch branches are bent across a snow pit to form a roof frame and then covered with a tarp. In the interior, slender branches are laid across the floor. The traditional Bavarian mountain infantry word for this type of cold insulation is “Dachsn”. It prevents soldiers from having to kneel directly on the cold snow. Two expedition stoves are set to one side. These are used to melt snow in aluminium pots to prepare hot drinks and instant meals.
