Bundeswehr aids in monitoring truce in Gaza
On 10 October 2025, after two years of war in the Middle East, Israel and the Islamist terrorist organisation Hamas agreed on a truce. In order to stabilise this truce, a civil-military coordination centre has been established in Israel, which is now the new workplace of three servicemen from Germany.
On 17 October 2025, the Federal Ministry of Defence announced the despatch of two senior officers and one brigadier general of the Bundeswehr Joint Force Command to the Civil Military Coordination Centre (CMCC) in southern Israel. Led by an American three-star general, around 200 military personnel from the U.S. as well as representatives of partner nations and members of nongovernmental organisations are already working there. Now, three Bundeswehr servicemen complement the international team.
The armistice was agreed upon thanks to the U.S. government acting as a mediator. It is part of a 20‑point plan for permanently preserving peace in Gaza. According to the plans of the U.S. government, an International Stabilisation Force (ISF) is to be established in order to implement the 20-point plan. This force is tasked with supervising adherence to the ceasefire, safeguarding public order and protecting Gaza's borders. The CMCC will serve as a coordination element for the ISF particularly in the fields of training and logistics and is to coordinate and support the work of humanitarian relief organisations.
According to a spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Defence, the officers from Germany will initially focus on building a network of all relevant actors on site. After having done so, they will compile a comprehensive situation picture. However, the fact that the three officers were despatched does not mean that Germany will be part of the ISF. At the moment, there are no such plans. Further involvement in the CMCC depends on how its task portfolio will evolve and is subject to close coordination with partners, according to the spokesperson.
