The Special Air Mission Wing of the Federal Ministry of Defense provides a substantial part of the Bundeswehr airlift capacity, which is also used by the parliamentary domain.
The Special Air Mission Wing of the Federal Ministry of Defence, with three Airbus A350s, and two A319CJs each, one Airbus A319 OHOffener Himmel Open Skies, one Airbus A321, two Airbus A321 LRs, three Bombardier Global 5000s, three Global 6000s, and three Cougar AS-532 helicopters, constitutes a significant portion of the Bundeswehr's air transport capacity, which is also utilized by the parliamentary sector. The fleet ensures the worldwide transport of VIPsVery Important Person, personnel, and materials. Additionally, it offers the capability for transporting sick and injured persons, as well as flights under the Treaty on Open Skies.
Currently, the unit is stationed at two locations. The majority of the Special Air Mission Wing is located at Cologne Wahn. The detached Berlin section is situated at Schönefeld at the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport for handling government flight operations.
