With its servicemen and women engaged in civil-military cooperation, the Bundeswehr can look back on over 20 years of experience in theatres of operations around the world. The establishment of the Bundeswehr Civil-Military Cooperation Command is the logical consequence of increasing multinational cooperation.
The Bundeswehr Civil-Military Cooperation Command (BwCIMIC Cmd) in Nienburg/Weser is the Bundeswehr centre of expertise responsible for the specialist task of civil-military cooperation (CIMICCivil Military Co-Operation).
CIMICCivil Military Co-Operation specialists compile a picture of the civilian situation in the countries of deployment and advise military leaders on the impact of military and civil action, and the consequences to be expected for their planning and conduct of operations. This involves liaising with the civilian population, government authorities and international organisations. To accomplish these tasks, CIMICCivil Military Co-Operation Battalion 100 was established in Nienburg in 2003, and has since been restructured and renamed several times: CIMICCivil Military Co-Operation Centre (2006); Bundeswehr Civil-Military Cooperation Centre (2013); Multinational Civil-Military Cooperation Command (2019), and today's Bundeswehr Civil-Military Cooperation Command (2025). Each time the agency was renamed, the range of its tasks was extended.
Within the scope of the Framework Nations Concept, Germany assumed the role of framework nation for CIMICCivil Military Co-Operation. Established structures and the international contacts required to accomplish the pertinent tasks were already in place at the agency in Nienburg.
Approximately 200 military and civilian personnel of the Bundeswehr Civil-Military Cooperation Command are based at Clausewitz Barracks in Nienburg, with further staff assigned to the Academy for Crisis Management, Emergency Planning and Civil Protection in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and the CIMICCivil Military Co-Operation Centre of Excellence in The Hague.
