61 Surface-to-Air Missile Group
61 Surface-to-Air Missile Group employs the leFlaSysLeichtes Flugabwehrsystem (Light Air Defence System) for highly mobile short-range air defence. In the future, the group will also utilize the IRIS-T SLMInfra-Red Imaging System–Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled, Surface-Launched Medium Range weapon system to cover the medium-range spectrum.
Mission
The core mission of Surface-to-Air Missile Group 61 (FlaRakGrp 61) is currently the highly mobile short-range air defence of land forces using the leFlaSysLeichtes Flugabwehrsystem (Light Air Defence System). This Short Range Air Defence (SHORAD) weapon system is specifically designed to engage low-flying hostile aerial targets.
Until October 2023, FlaRakGrp 61 also operated the close-range protection system MANTISModular, Automatic and Network capable Targeting and Interception System.
In the future, the unit’s capabilities will be expanded to include the medium-range spectrum with the introduction of five state-of-the-art IRIS-T SLMInfra-Red Imaging System–Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled, Surface-Launched Medium Range weapon systems. The conversion to this new system is scheduled to be completed by mid-2027. The first system was commissioned in September 2024.
