Mission of WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41

WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 is the technical center of competence for the Federal Ministry of Defense, for BAAINBwBundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr and for other public or civilian customers, both at national and international level, in the field of land-based vehicles systems, related vehicle components and mobile electric power supply.

The WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle's scope of tasks covers land-based vehicle systems, the related vehicle components (propulsion and running gear components, electrochemical energy sources and storage devices, vehicle electrics, testing technologies, autonomous driving, robotics and vetronics) and mobile electric power supply.

Furthermore, this Bundeswehr Technical Center is responsible for engineer and general field equipment of the Bundeswehr. This includes:

  • engineer construction and auxiliary equipment
  • mechanized explosive ordnance reconnaissance (EOR) and explosive ordnance disposal (EODExplosive Ordnance Disposal) equipment
  • military bridging and ferrying equipment
  • POLPetrol, Oil and Lubricants supply using refueling trucks
  • POLPetrol, Oil and Lubricants storage technology and pipeline technology
  • in-theater accommodation including
  • camp technologies and mobile medical facilities

Bundeswehr/WTD 41

This Bundeswehr Technical Center works for the Federal Ministry of Defense, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBwBundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr), the armed forces and other public and civilian customers, both at national and international level. It combines special infrastructural and personnel capabilities, thus achieving a concentration of resources at a single location that gives it a unique level of systems expertise and methodological skills. This level of competence is equally attractive for defense-related and civilian vehicle manufacturers.

Further fields of activity of WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 include soil mechanics, hydraulic systems, pressurized gas technologies and technical support related to refueling trucks and mobile POLPetrol, Oil and Lubricants containers of different types, including support during the in-service phase. 

In addition, this Bundeswehr Technical Center performs project management functions beyond the point of service introduction for the following types of equipment: common tools, tool kits, workshop equipment and related testing equipment, engineer materiel, engineer equipment kits and diving equipment. This scope of tasks also includes ladders and footsteps, climbing aids, boarding equipment, material handling equipment, preservation and packaging means, air dehumidification equipment and Bundeswehr railway services.

WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 also provides training in the professions of motor vehicle mechatronics technician and electronics technician for devices and systems.

Tasks of WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41

WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 tests, examines and assesses land-based vehicle systems, vehicle components, engineer equipment and general field equipment. It has the overall technical responsibility for the technological aspects of vehicle components and for batteries, charging techniques and fuels cells used in all armed services of the Bundeswehr.

WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 bears technical responsibility for:

  • automotive electrics
  • automotive electrical system simulation 
  • diagnosis of automotive bus systems 
  • electrical tests on assemblies and components
  • tests on electricity generators
  • vibration tests (as part of environmental tests)

It is furthermore responsible for the type certification of mechanical and electronic assemblies, for research and technology studies on vehicle-specific applications and for providing technical support to project management performed at public authority level.

WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 performs experimental and analytical examinations as well as integrated compliance demonstrations in the framework of the procurement and in-service support process called Customer Product Management (CPMCustomer Product Management). As far as the in-service use of land-based vehicle systems, vehicle components, engineer and general field equipment is concerned, WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 bears the responsibility for providing technical support.

Organizational structure of WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41

The Bundeswehr Technical Center for Land-Based Vehicle Systems, Engineer and General Field Equipment is organized into a Staff element, three Divisions, an Engineering and Operational Services element and an Economic and Administrative Services element.

The Staff assists the Director, WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 in fulfilling his responsibilities. It provides control elements in terms of business economics, grouped together under the headings of Controlling, Scheduling of Work and Cost & Performance Responsibility.

The operative functions of the WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle are performed by Branches as sub-elements of the Divisions. The Branches mainly carry out specialist trial-related tasks and research & technology projects. The Engineering and Operational Services element of WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 includes the technical support and measurement services, whereas the administrative services are grouped together in the Economic and Administrative Services element.

Coming from the directions of Köln/Koblenz or Saarbrücken

  • At exit Trier/Schweich, change from A 1 to A 602. Stay on this road and exit at "Trier–Verteilerkreis". 
  • Having passed the Trier city entrance, turn left and enter the roundabout. Then turn right into Herzogenbuscher Strasse (first exit in the roundabout). 
  • Stay on Herzogenbuscher Strasse, after about one kilometer turn left into Wasserweg. 
  • Follow this street until you reach a railway underpass (Caution: the maximum clearance height is 3.90 m). Having passed under the railway line, go straight on, after about one kilometer turn left into Kolonnenweg. 
  • Follow the road signs leading you to WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41.

Coming from the direction of Bitburg

  • Change from A 64 to B 51 at exit "Trier" and continue in the direction of Trier. 
  • Having crossed the Kaiser-Wilhelm bridge, turn right and then immediately take the left lane. At the first traffic lights, turn left into Zurmaiener Strasse (U-turn) and follow that street in the direction of Verteilerkreis (roundabout).  
  • From Zurmaiener Strasse, turn right into Herzogenbuscher Strasse (first exit in the roundabout). Stay on Herzogenbuscher Strasse, after about one kilometer turn left into Wasserweg. 
  • Follow this street until you reach a railway underpass (Caution: the maximum clearance height is 3.90 m). Having passed under the railway line, go straight on, after about one kilometer turn left into Kolonnenweg.

Coming from the direction of Konz/Saarburg

Approaching Trier on the B 51, coming from Konz/Saarburg, you have two possibilities to get to WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41:

1st possibility:

  • Follow B 51/B 49 (Pacelliufer/Katharinenufer) until you reach the exit Trier-Verteilerkreis (roundabout). Turn right into the roundabout. Then turn right into Herzogenbuscher Strasse (first exit in the roundabout). Stay on Herzogenbuscher Strasse, after about one kilometer turn left into Wasserweg. 
  • Follow this street until you reach a railway underpass (Caution: the maximum clearance height is 3.90 m). Having passed under the railway line, go straight on, after about one kilometer turn left into Kolonnenweg. 
  • Follow the road signs leading you to WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41.

2nd possibility:

  • Follow B 51/B 49 (Pacelliufer). Before reaching the Römerbrücke bridge, turn right into Südallee (direction of Olewig/Universität). 
  • Follow this street in the direction of Universität. When you reach the traffic lights after a right-hand bend, turn right into Kohlenstraße. Follow this street for about two kilometers, then turn right into Kolonnenweg. 
  • Follow the road signs leading you to WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41.
  • Having arrived at Trier central station (Hauptbahnhof), you can take a bus from bus platform 5. Take either SWTStadtwerke Trier line no. 3 (heading for Tarforst/Ludwig-Erhard-Ring) or SWTStadtwerke Trier line no. 13 (heading for Tarforst/Universität Mensa) and get off at "Kolonnenweg" bus stop.
  • From there, follow the road signs. You will reach WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle 41, which is located on the Grüneberg hill, after a 700 m (uphill) walk.

How to get there by car

Leave the A 61 at exit Koblenz-Metternich and follow the road signs for Koblenz. Having passed the military hospital (Bundeswehrzentralkrankenhaus) follow the road signs for Universität (or "Uni"). Before reaching the Kurt-Schumacher bridge, stay on the right lane and follow the road signs "Uni, Wehrtechnische Dienststelle".

How to get there by public transportation

Take the train to Koblenz Hauptbahnhof (central station). From there, take bus no. 5 or 20 heading for Metternich, get off at "Metternich Universität" bus stop.  From there it is a five minutes' walk to the entrance of the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle (WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle).

How to get to the Koblenz-Rübenach off-post test sites 1 and 2

These WTDWehrtechnische Dienststelle off-post test sites are located in the immediate vicinity of the Autobahn (A 61) exit "Koblenz-Metternich". Please follow the road signs from the Autobahn underpass.

Public transportation is not advisable.
